Is Olive Leaf Extract Leather Made From Animals
Ahhh, Olea europaea : the olive. What does this beautiful, tasty footling fruit (yep, it's a fruit) have to do with leather, you ask? Something quite ingenious, actually.
We're really talking about olive leaves , the key ingredient to a new, sustainable leather tanning process that uses byproduct from the olive oil industry. We recently launched several olive-tanned leathers on our site that would make any sofa luxurious, and thought we'd use this space to explain why they're a more than eco-friendly option. Intrigued? Let's learn more than.
Why + how leather is tanned

Permit's cover the basics first: "tanning" is a full general term for converting fauna hides into finished leather. While but one function of the leather-making process, proper tanning is well-nigh the almost important stride: subsequently several steps of cleaning and preparing the hides, tanning is what makes leather durable, breathable, and resistant to decay.
The tanning procedure triggers a reaction of collagen fibers in the hide via diverse agents, similar trivalent chromium or vegetable tannins from tree bark such as Willow, Chestnut, and Birch. Tanning derives its proper name from tannin , a chemical compound found in some bark and plant tissue; in other words, tannins in leather-making (like those in wine) have a unique issue on the substance to which they are bonded.
Fun fact: vegetable tanning is the oldest reported tanning method (side notation: leather making has been good for more than 7,000 years!). Past about 400 BCE, Egyptians and Hebrews had adult vegetable tanning via simple drying and curing techniques using Oak bark and Babul pods.
However used today, vegetable tanning basically involves soaking hides in large vats of extracted and candy tannin juice for weeks or months. Many other tanning methods have since adult–synthetic tanning, tanning with fats and oils, and tawing, to name a few —and some are much faster, less expensive processes, like chrome tanning (the nigh pop).
What makes olive-tanned leather sustainable?
So why tan with olive leaves? Sustainability in the leather market has become a rising concern; chrome tanning, mentioned in a higher place, is employed by effectually 80% of the leather industry and tin can produce waste that is toxic and polluting. While traditionally used without harsh chemicals, vegetable tanning has been said to threaten deforestation for some areas where deadening-growing trees accept been articulate cut and killed for their tannins, such equally Quebracho copse in Uruguay and Argentina.
Olive Greenish Leather from Moore & Giles is created from fallen olive leaves in the Mediterranean region, which have traditionally been burned rather than repurposed later on olive harvesting for olive oil product.
